While They're Young

A friend of mine Ben has a little brother who has just started going to primary school. Alongside learning about the wonders of numbers, letters, and Transformers, he has also been exposed to a variety of new social structures. Specifically, he's started bringing home the sailor talk.

Unfortunately for him the lesson plan for discussing the different applications of the verb 'to ho' falls a bit short around the playground, which leaves our wee protagonist a bit confused most of the time.

"Ben, what does gay mean?"

"What do you think it means?"

"I don't know."

"Why do you ask?"

"Well all the kids at school call me gay. And each other. That call everyone gay."

"What do they think it means?"

"They don't know either. Their brothers call them gay."

Lo, another generation indoctrinated into sexual ambiguity.

I don't wanna start nothin, but Humor Blogs has been asking difficult questions about your sexuality too. Better go there now and set them straight.

Even my gay mates will call things they're not fond of 'gay', so it's now become a description for an item or unanimate object as in, 'those sandals are gay, don't buy them.'

Sapph told me a few weeks ago that if she was on a deserted island and could only choose one boy to share it with, "I'd choose Selene, who's a girl. I'd rather be a lesbian than be with any of the boys in my class." Love Chunks was thrilled with her answer.

As far as I can see it's gone from meaning good things: happy happy joy joy.
To specific things: sexuality/homosexual.
To derogatory put down of various items and peoples.
And then I'd heard a year or so ago that it had become a positive judgement of various things or peeps, and so I stopped using it altogether as it just got too confusing.

Can't we just go back to being happy?

That's just his way of saying 'hi' Rosie. Incidentally, could you let him know that I called him an 'nancy boy'? He'll know what I mean.

Kath -- Once again Sapphire puts us all to shame with her effortless cool. Lemme guess - the only thing she'd take with her would be a Jimmy Page signed Led Zeppelin guitar? Yeah thought so.

Blomster, you sure people weren't having a lend with that last one? I'm not 100% sure the vernacular has shifted back to it being a positive term.

I only say this because I brought it up with a group of skinheads over the weekend, and they assured me it was the height of rudeness and ridicule. They were quite smart guys too, what with all the reading of 'My First Camping' books written in German and so forth.

Well I think I'd prefer to be thought correct by skinheads more than anyone else, so I'm happy to go along with that.
Quite gay in fact!
